Descriptive Essay: Beauty and Beast

Recently, I got the chance to see a play that was amazing. It was at Maine East that I witnessed the beauty that is Theater. I walked into the dimly lit auditorium not knowing what to expect. The place was pretty full. There were people everywhere, tall and short people lined the aisles trying to find their seats; there were little heads poking out from the tops of some seats. The kids were looking around amazed by the set. I was hoping they would enjoy the show like I hoped I would. I walked through the crowd of people blocking the aisles to find my seat. I had a fairly good view of the stage from where I was sitting. I was off to the left of the auditorium in the 6th or 7th row. I couldn’t wait for the show to start. I was twitching I was so excited. At the time the only thing on the stage was the front of the castle.
When the show started it got really quite and the attention was on the old beggar woman who was talking to the prince. The beggar was short and wore old tattered clothes. She seemed frail. The Prince stood proudly and tall pointing at her to go away. At that moment she literally rose off of the floor and she was then dressed in a beautiful white gown that shown like diamonds. She waved her glittering wand and “transformed” the prince into a hideous beast. The light that shown down on him was a white light and it showed his horrific features. His hair was shaggy and long and his face was looked like a beast, hideous, not like a human. At that point some kids screamed and quivered. Parents had to hold their children. One person had to leave because the site scared him. The stage then went black. Everyone that came out on stage next was dressed very vibrantly. Smiles were spread across their faces as they sang a song.
When they showed the castle I was mesmerized. I had never seen anything like it. The craftsmanship was beautiful. The walls looked like they were made of brick, gray, cracked brick. It gave the castle an old look. It made it seem like the castle had been around for a long time. It stood very tall, maybe 7 feet or higher. The curtains looked tattered and torn as if they were old or someone had ripped them. They were red and long. They draped to the ground, they also had a dingy look to them. It seemed like if you blew on them dust would cover everything around them. I could tell that whoever worked on this set really put a lot of time and effort into it.
In the next scene when they showed Belle’s room they rolled a bed out on stage and a dresser (which was a character). The lighting was dim and made her room look dingy as if no one had been there for a long time. She sat on the bed a wept. It was one of the most realistic things I had seen. She really seemed like she was crying and that she had lost something dear to her. The emotion in her tone when she talked showed me that she was really playing the part. Her hair was brown and in a pony-tail, and she wore a blue dress with an apron in front. She really looked like Belle in my eyes. She stood up straight; she appeared to have good posture.
Toward the end of the play when the Beast and Gaston had their fight it was pretty intense and exciting. They both seemed like they were really into it. It seemed like they were really fighting for something. The beast was wearing his long dark and mysterious cape while Gaston ore his hunter outfit, which was orange and green. Gaston had a menacing look on his face. He looked like he wanted to kill.
The scene where the beast was thought to be dead and belle was kneeling beside him was a very intense moment. She seemed to really be broken up. I felt like I was going to cry. The emotion in her voice carried over and I could feel it myself. He floated up into the air and he lost his ugliness and became a handsome prince. At that point I felt like crying because it was a happy moment. The smiles on the cast faces beamed with joy as the all became people again. The emotion that filled that auditorium that day brightened me up. That play had such an effect on me that I will never forget it. When I look back on it I can’t help but smile because I really believed that the play was real. It seemed like I was there at the castle and it all was real. I don’t think I ever saw a play like that in my life. Everyone seemed so devoted to what they were doing. To be able to portray such characters so well must have taken a lot o f time and effort and it carried through. Every minute of it was believable and enjoyable.
The set itself was phenomenal and the performance was even better. That is one night I will never forget.
