Grubbs Grady is an average kid. He’s A bit bigger and slyer than a lot of boys his age), but nothing special. He leads an ordinary life, and expects it will always be that way. But when his parents and sister behave strangely, Grubbs decides to stick his nose in their business his entire world is thrown into chaos. He discovers that demons are real, and that terrible things can happen right in front of your eyes.
This series is still being written by none other than Darren Shan. After I read The Cirque Du Freak series (Saga of Darren Shan) I wondered what other books Darren Shan had written and I came across this series. I was looking in the back of the last Saga book and it was advertising a series called the Demonata and it was written by Darren Shan. I couldn’t believe it, and I was so excited to see if this would interest me, so I picked it up and I loved it. From beginning to end this series is filled with excitement and detail. This series has nothing to do with vampires like the last series he wrote but it has to do with demons and the parallel universe that coincides with our world. Demons, which are the main evil in this book, are these hideous creatures that roam around their own realm awaiting a strong enough demon (or a human) to open a portal to our world, the human world. There are also these demons that are referred to as Demon master. They are the strongest of demons. They are the ones that command the demon realm. Other demons pay respect to them by becoming their followers. These followers are known as familiars. Familiars are like the demon masters lackeys. They follow around the demon master and do his bidding. The strongest Demon Master goes by the name of Lord Loss. He has no sympathy for anyone and feeds on the sorrow of humans. He is the first demon that Grubbs Grady (the main character) ever meets. Much like Darren Shan, in the Saga of Darren Shan, Grubbs is faced with a lot of life altering decisions at a young age. I think Darren Shan is a wonderful author who has a great imagination for the “weird” and that’s one of the reasons I find his work so interesting. This series is just bursting with detail. When I read something like this I feel as though the demons themselves are going to pop out of the pages. It makes me feel like the characters truly exist, and that really gets to me. I just can’t believe that a person can have that kind of effect on someone. Being able to make someone else feel the emotion of what you have written on paper amazes me. I really like this series and I am still reading it at the moment. I think that it’s a challenge to make others believe so much in the characters that you create and make them feel like they are part a story. That is a true talent in my eyes.
